He contributed to the development of drugs to treat high blood pressure, stroke and airways diseases. In the course of this work he contributed to the discovery of new calcium channel blocking agents. Later, working with diagnostic imaging agents, he and colleagues developed novel agents to reduce the deleterious side effects of anti-cancer chemotherapy, and to prevent the frequently fatal effects of paracetomol overdose and founded a company to develop these drugs. Nowadays Dr Towart’s interest is in providing initial investment to start-up companies developing novel treatments for life-threatening diseases.
